LASIK is a surgery, which reshapes the cornea and thus changes the patient’s vision. Correctly performed, LASIK eye surgery can correct the most common forms of vision impairment. It is the most commonly used method (about 75%) due to the short duration of the operation time and the rapid recovery (many patients return to work the next day). The time in surgery is around 5 minutes per eye.
It is a 2 step procedure. During the first step of LASIK eye surgery, Femtosecond laser is used and a thin layer of tissue is folded back from the surface of the cornea. In second step, another laser Excimer laser is used and this laser reshapes the cornea, the tissue is folded back into place, where it bonds quickly.
Brief information about LASIK surgery:
Because your eyes and your vision are as unique to you as your fingerprints and DNA, it’s challenging for me to know whether LASIK eye surgery can benefit you without a personal examination. I like my patients to be at least 18 years of age, have healthy corneas, and to have had stable vision over the past year. Determining if you are a candidate for LASIK eye surgery is a multi-step process. The first step is to measure your vision. Then, the entire eye is examined, starting from the cornea to the retina. Finally, a detailed evaluation is made with corneal topography measurements.
There are 3 main types of vision impairment:
Myopia (nearsightedness),
Hyperopia (farsightedness),
Astigmatism.
Within certain limits, all of these disorders can be treated with LASIK.
If your eye is not suitable for LASIK, it may be suitable for surface laser ablation treatment (PRK) or intraocular lens treatments (Phakic IOLs, Refractive lens exchange).
LASIK has been implemented since 1990. It is estimated that around 200 million people have LASIK. It is still the most commonly performed (75% of all) eye laser surgery in the world. In experienced hands, the possibility of side effects is very low.
To give an example, just as the feet of every person given the same size shoes are not exactly the same, the vision of every person with -2 degree myopia is not the same. Wave-front technology allows unprecedented customization and accuracy, making it possible for the actual laser treatment to be fully customized to the unique characteristics of each of your eyes. This precise level of measurement and treatment can enable you to achieve the full potential of your personal best vision.
